Minerals
A sense of scale, that can make one realise how small they are in the grand scheme of things. This experience is what initiated our investigation into stone, appreciating what it has to offer and the details that otherwise go unnoticed.
The exploration began with the formal qualities of stones formation. A process of immense pressure and history, transcending a solidity, stability and grounding presence. This is what large pieces of stone can make us feel, a proximity that gives us a sense of self.
Conceptual Inception
Minerals
The large stones are arranged into a landscape that reflects the stones formal qualities across the mirror polished surface of the bronze. This proximity creates curiosity that draws the onlooker closer before revealing the varied landscape interior of each bronze piece.
Minerals is a series of mirror-polished bronze forms, with intricate interiors patinaed black. These pieces are placed in proximity to large stones, designed to tension the delicate treatment and preciousness of bronze, against the solidity, weight and beauty of the natural stone.
The raw bronze goes through multiple stages of grinding and welding to clean up surface imperfections and form flat geometric sides. The form is then sandblasted, heated and treated with a patina. Multiple levels of polishing is then applied to achieve a mirror polish, before each piece recieves a final hand polished.
Each finished bronze Mineral takes over 10 stages to produce their delicate aeshtetics. The process involves multiple concrete casted models that are used to visualise the internal landscape of patterns of each piece. The selected models are used to produce rubber molds that allow a wax version to be made. The wax is then used in a lost wax casting process to cast a raw bronze piece.
Stages to preciousness
This fragmention and eroding internal patterns are hidden at a distance by the deep black patina that absorbs the light. The audience is drawn closer by their curiosity of the bronzes preciousness, which reveals a complex interior landscape, tying back to the formations of the stones formal qualities.
The mirror-polished bronze forms convey a sense of value through their treatment. Their harmonised within a landscape of large stones grounding the installation within its environment. The bronze’s mirror-polish is delicate, creating a perception of preciousness thats incomplete.
